“Sorry I’m late. Traffic was a nightmare!”
You are traffic.
We’re privileged to be able to consider our own motives and desires.
This means that we judge ourselves based on our drivers/intent, whilst we can only judge others on our perceptions of their actions.
Actions that others do can be unacceptable. Yet, when we do those same actions, that lens of intent changes it from being unacceptable.
We never caused the traffic issues…
In organisations, the same applies.
We all believe we do a great job with the best of intentions, but judge others based solely on their actions – and then we might overlay accusation and blame when things aren’t quite right.
But are our actions part of the traffic? Part of the flood?
🐝 Do we tolerate poor behaviours, because it’s easier than challenging?
🐝 Do we also tolerate great behaviours – failing to recognise when something betters our expectations, but we let it slide unnoticed?
🐝 Do we consistently appreciate and amplify what is and isn’t acceptable or expected?
Culture isn’t an initiative.
Culture’s not one person’s responsibility.
Culture’s not done to people.
It’s seen in the consistent, expected and encouraged behaviours that are permitted within any group of people.
And every single person influences, moulds and evolves it over time.
Every drop of rain is an influencer…
How are you influencing the culture(s) around you?
Are you doing it on purpose (i.e., towards as specific goal)?
