Who leads when the leader is not in the room?
Psychologist, consultant and accredited coach Danny Wareham’s question, which begins the book, is extremely thought provoking and made me interested in searching for the answer.
The book is in three sections; It begins with the history of leadership, analysing culture and introducing constellation leadership. Wareham shares a refreshing viewpoint: “In constellation leadership, each
professional is recognised as an expert – a star in their own right – surrounded by other professional stars.”
In section two, he invites us to think in a new way, sharing the constellation leadership model, by highlighting purpose and goals, explaining organisational culture and the ecosystem of partners, and questioning what success means. He calls the tolerance of failure and trust the “glue of life”, and explores the ‘you’ factor – personality and individual differences – and the ‘we’ factor: team psychological
safety and trust.
Finally, Wareham guides us on a practical journey of implementing constellation leadership – a roadmap,
supported by case studies to illustrate the ethos of this form of leadership.
This book is fascinating and I recommend it. One phrase in particular stood out: “Constellation
leadership does not remove the need for leadership; it redistributes it.”
Leadership doesn’t sit with one person and constellation leadership offers a new lens for us all to evaluate our shared purpose.
