It’s a horrible phrase that’s growing in usage.
People are not capital.
Yes, like capital, your people can help you add value to your business – but it’s just such a cold, calculating phrase.
As I look at strike action around the country, it shows that people are demanding their return on companies successes.
Job security; better conditions; pay to be reflective of the profits made.
If we genuinely think our people are capital, then these should be a given. It’s a clear return on investment for that resource.
If we don’t – and believe people should be treated with respect – then these should be a given, too.
I hope it’s the latter and that we start to put the focus back onto the “human” in human resources.
It comes first for a reason.
