But the science is not in the physics of money, but in the chemistry of people.
Fun Fact: Although I am a Business Psychologist, I used to study biology, chemisty, and physics.
Chemistry – and particularly biochemistry – was my favourite.
It fascinated me that you could mix two chemicals together and get something completely different as a result.
But, if you study chemistry, you find that this isn’t really how it happens.
Yes, you need the right combination of chemicals.
But you also need the right environment and, often, a supporting catalyst for the reaction and result you want to see.
The same is true in our organisations.
It’s not enough to have the right mix of people, policies and processes.
We need to ensure the conditions are optimal for the right, productive reactions to take place.
That catalyst is your culture.
Like a chemical catalyst, it can help everything move in the way you intended.
Or, if it’s mismatched, it can slow the process down, making everything a little bit harder and more expensive – and not getting you the result you planned for.
The result might even be toxic.
