An old model with new technology is still an old model
How will ChatGPT and other AI change internal communications the workplace?
My view? In the same way that Sharepoint changed internal communications.
“𝘞𝘩𝘰𝘢! 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵!?”, I hear you lament.
Absolutely. Sharepoint is a fantastic tool. Functionality-wise, it allows for multiple editors to create and publish just about any media at any time to any audience.
It can be fully customised and branded. It can have varying levels of permissions to different users and audiences. You can control information flows, feedback and discussions, all within a single interface across a practically unlimited number of disparate employees.
So why the hate?
Because we do what we almost always do with new technology. We deploy it over our existing models.
So it inherits the same challenges and, often, introduces new ones to boot.
Finding the right tool for the job is important.
But knowing what the job is – what we’re trying to do – is even more vital.
If new tools, technologies and the “shiny shiny” are released into our organisations without understanding that purpose, we end up with the same meat, different gravy.
AI has the capability to revolutionise our workplaces.
But we need to know what we’re trying to fix to harness its true potential.
