Is it time for a new type of leadership?
Question: Who is the leader of a beehive? 🐝
We might naturally think ofthe queen as being the leader.
After all, we use the term “queen bee” in common language to indicate that someone is in charge.
But that’s not quite the case.
No individual bee is the leader.
Instead, there is a core reason for existing – a purpose: the survival of the hive.
Each bee plays a specifc role in contributing towards that shared purpose.
🐝 The queen produces offspring
🐝 The drones find food
🐝 The soldiers evict the males at the season’s end
The drones are never tasked with producing eggs.
The soldiers aren’t tasked with searching for food.
Each bee has their own skills and strengths – and each plays to those strengths, which the purpose and the environment directs.
The environment becomes the leader.
This is the basis of Constellation Leadership.
A new model that proposes a leader-less leadership approach, where a clear, shared vision, psychological safety and a culture that allows each individual to contribute purposefully.
The academic research is published, the model has been presented at The Institute of Leadership, and I’ll be discussing the findings of the research and their implications on a podcast next week.
