The word culture comes from the Latin colere, which means to cultivate.
When a farmer cultivates, they’re not focused on the fruit.
They’re focused on the day-to-day; the often mundane; the fundamental.
Careful watering.
Tending to the crops.
Making sure the environment is as conducive to growth as possible.
If those little, consistent things are taken care of, the harvest will come.
Too often, we’re distracted when we attempt to cultivate.
Introducing the latest shiny new tractor (technology); trying to grow things in a field that’s un/under-prepared (estate design); trying to improve our yield with a new wonderfood (incentives).
These might work short-term.
But without understanding the wider farm and the long-term direction of our growth strategy, this isn’t sustainable and can be extremely costly.
Worse still, we might find ourselves in a famine…
