The hardest thing about running your own consultancy?
The realisation that no one cares.
No one cares what you do
No one cares what tools you use
No one cares about the badges you have
But this is how we tend to discuss our work.
“I help teams to blah blah…”
“I use blah model to leverage…”
“I’m qualified in blah and blah…”
People don’t connect with that.
Imagine you needed a plasterer.
If the plasterer explained about their years of experience using a RST Poly Float because of its lightweight polyurethane construction and comfortable handle, you’d tell them to jog on.
You don’t care about that.
You just need the wall plastering.
And, really, you don’t need the wall plastering.
You actually want your mother-in-law to not be judging you when she comes for Sunday dinner and that wall is still not finished.
That’s what the plasterer solves.
Learning how to articulate the pain you solve for clients – rather than listing your qualifications, past clients, tools, and experiences – is the skill that all small business owners would benefit from.
