Many organisations pride themselves on their openness and transparency.
They might even have these as a value.
Having an open door policy, where employees can ask, challenge and ideate might sound like a fantastic way to operate.
But openness can mean that we actually value overcommunication over not disturbing people.
“We’ll tell everyone everything, and that makes us open and transparent.”
This approach misses a vital part: Clarity.
Not everyone needs to know everything.
Not everyone that needs to know something needs to know now.
A culture of openness also requires its counterbalance of clarity to ensure that we’re not simply creating a fire-and-forget communication approach – carpet-bombing our people with content without context.
Not telling everyone everything can be just as open and transparent, if we consider the what’s-in-it-for-me for the audience.
