Ask for feedback and you might create a critic.
Ask for advice and you might create a partner.
Should we stop asking for feedback?
There are very few people that take pleasure in intentionally criticising. So why can it be hard to ask for (and, often, give) feedback?
The challenge is not as much in the asking as in the recipient understanding how their comments can be constructive and useful, without wanting to offend or insult.
The word “feedback” semantically primes both parties to tie the comments back to WHAT is good and WHAT can be improved, when what you’re really needing is HOW can I develop.
In a word, you need advice.
What is their advice on how you can develop and which approaches might help?
Your improved what then becomes the evidence of that advice.
