Yeah, I said what I said.
One of 2023’s highlights for me was publishing my academic research, which proposes a revolution in leadership.
Leadership has always been centered on a person.
The arguement has then been around what traits, context, situation or relationships that person has or develops. But it has always been a person.
That person would set the vision or direction, and then the terms of engagement; the rules (often unwritten) of how we get things done around here.
My research asked if those two things were already clear – the goal and the culture – is the individual leader necessary?
The results were intriguing.
In optimal circumstances – where group trust and individual competency is high, and the group membership is below a threshold – leadership becomes co-created and shared amongst members.
In this setting, leaders don’t lead the people; they create the environment where they can lead themselves.
Or, in other words, culture can be the leader.
Intrigued?
