I won’t help you create a great place to work.
I don’t agree that it should be a focus for a business.
You’re not in business to create a commune.
Some comfortable space where people can be themselves and do what they want, when they want.
Puppies in the office.
Unlimited Krispy Kreme donuts.
Wear a onesie Wednesday.
Show me that in your business plan.
Yet this is how many people – including some culture consultants – approach employee engagement and culture.
But culture is not about creating a great place to work.
It’s about creating a place where great work is done.
Culture isn’t a bolt-on or a nice to have.
It’s a strategic tool, built-in to your organisation, woven through everything, that helps you achieve your goals.
It’s the lubricant that helps everything move in the right direction.
That might be fun.
It might create a great place to work.
But that’s not what it’s core purpose is.
Culture creates places where great work is done.
If perks and pizzas help you achieve that great work, fill your boots.
Do it more.
But if you want to treat your people strategy strategically and purposefully, and you want your team(s) to make better decisions, and encourage behaviours and approaches that support your organisational goals, then maybe we should have a chat.
