We’re leaving over 85% of our tools in the van.
That’s the findings of a Workday insight report into the utilisation of individual skills versus those required in the role we perform.
85% of the skills you have as an individual are not used day-to-day in your role.
I’m a fantastic cook.
I’m can also code SQL databases, understand conversational French, and convert almost any imperial measurement to metric in my head – plus thousands of other skills and experiences I’ve collected across my life.
Yet I’m unlikely to require those roles in any single job description or remit.
But that doesn’t mean that some of our skills couldn’t be useful in some area of our organisation. Indeed, our role remits and job decriptions might be constraining all the value we could add to an organisation.
They force us to “stay in your lane”.
By being clear on the wider organisation’s vision and mission – it’s direction and what we want to achieve – and creating the environment that allows all to purposefully contribute towards that wider view, we can unlock skills and experience in our people that we never knew we had.
Or, we can continue to leave 85% of our tools in the van.
