“We want to have a culture like Apple/Google/Zappos”
Every workplace has a unique culture that forms over time through the interactions of the people who work there.
As it’s unique to your organisation, it is not something that can be lifted and shifted from another business. In short, what works well elsewhere might not work well somewhere else.
Work culture can influence individuals and vice versa. It’s not a static concept; it evolves and changes constantly, and requires thoughtful observation, measurement and approaches to ensure that it compliments and contributes positively to the organisation’s long-term strategy.
Although it might seem a little abstract, the approach to identifying an existing culture, understanding the future state and how it links to the strategy, and the employee experience approaches needed to develop the positive attributes of the culture are well studied.
And, whilst the culture itself is not portable, using the same approach from one organisation to another is not only possible – it’s tried and tested.
Giving people freedom and supplementing our instincts with scientific processes are steps on the path to making work meaningful and people happy.
So don’t try to emulate another business. Identify what makes you great and enhance it.
